Even The Strong Grow Weary

Elijah was one of the mightiest prophets of the Old Testament. So great was he that God handpicked him to appear alongside Moses before Jesus on the mount of transfiguration (Mark 9:4). John the Baptist is said to have come in the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17). He is even used as the example of what earnest prayer can accomplish (Jas 5:17-18). And yet 1 Kings 19 records for us Elijah’s despair, his weariness, his fears, and his sadness. This reminds me that even the strongest will slip and most courageous can cower.

Isa 40:30 says that youths grow weary and tired, yet they that wait on the Lord will gain new strength. And in 1 Cor 10:13, we’re reminded that no temptation overtakes us except that which is common to man. God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to endure.

Even in Elijah’s darkest hour, God’s loving embrace was ever present…tending to him, nourishing him, and rejuvenating him. Here’s to those “green pastures” that we’re made to lie in and the “quiet waters” to which we’re led when we’re most in need (Psa 23:2).
